Below are some general answers to frequently asked questions. Please feel free to ask any questions.
Communication:Please feel free to contact me at any time. You can call me, but I sometimes don’t answer the classroom phone during teaching times. Before or after school works best for me. Also, email is convenient because I can communicate with you when I get home in the evening. Notes in planners or folders works out great as long as your child remembers to let me know it’s there. I don’t look in student folders each day, but I do promote responsibility by reminding them to check for notes and homework each morning.
Routines:Routines and structure help keep students prepared and comfortable. They know what's expected. Setting a specific time of day for homework and reading at home would establish good habits and expectations that may prevent problems later down the road.

Grading:The Allendale report card is quite different from the one used at other schools in the younger grades. Students will now be graded with percentages and a grading scale. In previous years, your child was graded on a developmental report card, which measures whether or not certain skills were achieved. Teacher observations can also be a factor in that type of grading system. This year, in 2nd grade, your child will earn their grades based on their scores on assessments and graded papers. We are now on the district grading scale.

Planner & Homework:This year your child will receive a daily planner. At the end of each school day, students will copy what I write into their planner. We write important notes such as homework assignments, weekly spelling words, suggestions for skills to practice, upcoming events, and reminder notes. It is very important that your child bring this planner to school everyday and take it home for you to see and sign. Thanks for your support with this.
Homework is considered "practice" in my class. Although it is not graded, I do keep track of returned work to help me mark your child's "work habits" section of their report card. Please discuss your child's mistakes when homework or papers are brought home. Thanks so much for your support! Snack & Water Bottles:Your child is welcome to bring a snack each day. SNACK SUGGESTION LETTER You are also welcome to send in a water bottle with your child. I just ask that you keep it on the small size and not to freeze them. Thanks! Raising funds and planning events for the children takes a great deal of planning, organization, and hard work. If you would like to become more involved in your child's school, consider joining this team of parents and teachers. Meeting dates are listed on the Allendale PTO Website.
